Our Story

What is FPT
Head Start?

The FPT Head Start Program has operated under the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes since 1966. The head start program is one of the largest programs working under the FPT, with funding for 47 positions. The FPT has served as Grantee since the inception of Head Start on the reservation.

FPT Head Start serves predominantly American Indian / Alaskan Native children with a high percentage of families residing within the reservation boundaries. The Head Start program works in partnership with local health providers that assist with the annual health screenings.

Policy Council

FPT Head Start Policy Council is created with an elected member of the parent committes across the reservation to serve for the school year.

  • 1 President

  • 1 Vice President

  • 1 Secretary

These Policy Council representatives are selected during the first parent committee meetings held during the school year. Each center designates a representative from the parent committee to attend the Policy Council meetings.

The FPT Head Start Family Service workers encourage parents and guardians to attend. Policy Council receives information and updates from each component within the Head Start administration. Family Services, Nutrition, Disabilities, and Education helps in the decision making and approval processes.

The Policy Council collects information throught notes and minutes which are then documented and shared with the parent committees and schools.
